Gaafu Atoll (Maldives)

Maldives - Curiosity - Back to index

By: Carlo Piccinelli

Gaafu Atoll on Google Maps.
Gaafu Atoll, one of the southern atolls of Maldives archipelago, is famous among divers to dive in the kandu (pass), channels that connect the internal waters of the atoll with the ocean. During the tide change, in the kandus strong currents are generated and it is this phenomenon that attract divers. The dive begins by reaching the coral step leading to the enter of kandu on the outer side of the atoll. A few minutes of waiting to observe the sharks that patrol the area in search of food and then, at the signal of the guide, you let yourself be carried away by the current of water that enters in the atoll. Like sitting on a bus, dragged by this swirling river of water, you can observe the wonderful views of the reef, the white sands on the bottom of the kandu and the countless coral formations flowing in front of and underneath the divers. Unforgettable dives in the wonderful habitat of Maldivian atolls.
