Diros Caves on Google Maps.
The caves of Diros, Alepotrypa, Katafigi and Glyfada, are connected by a subterranean river. Currently, the path length inside the caves, is in total of 6.500 m but is still unknown the total underground length. Located on the west coast of the Laconian peninsula in the bay of Dirou, the caves were discovered at the beginning of 1900 but only in the 1970 starts the first underwater exploration. Inside the caves were found human skeletons and skulls, fossilized bones of panther, hyena, lion, deer, marten and the largest deposit of bones of hippos in Europe. Currently, the length of the path of the cave visited by the tourists, is 3100 m by boat and 300 m walking inside the caves between narrow passages and large rooms with spectacular stalactites and stalagmites.
