The secrets of Umbria (Sudan)

Sudan - Travel - Back to index

By: Carlo Piccinelli

Port Sudan on Google Maps-
It was 10 June 1940 when the Captain Lorenzo Muiesan of the italian freighter Umbria anchored along the Wingate Reef off Port Sudan, gave orders to flood the holds and sink the ship with its cargo of bombs, weapons and equipment intended for Italian colonies in Eritrea and Somalia. Today the wreck of the freighter Umbria, lies at a depth of about 30 m lying on the left side and very well preserved. Dive inside the wreck you can discover its "treasures" such as the large dining hall, the engine room, the mechanical workshop and the FIAT 1100 still in a fairly good condition as well as the holds still full of bombs plane, bullets, bottles of wine and perfume. A diving on the Umbria wreck, is a jump in the history and is one of the best dives to do when visiting the beautiful underwater world of the Sudanese Red Sea. Useful links for more informations:
