Villefranche sur mer on Google Maps.
Due to its position, sheltered from the winds and the sea, the original fishing village frequented first by the Greeks, then by the Romans and subsequently attacked by Saracen pirates who induced the population to move towards the hills, at the end of the 13th century the County of Provence to encourage the inhabitants to return to the seaside, he granted tax exemption by calling the new coastal village Villa Franca or tax-free village. In the 14th century, following the construction of the citadel of Saint Elme, the village became the most important military naval base of the Duchy of Savoy. In 1860 the County of Nice was annexed to France and shortly afterwards the Belle Époque period began which, in Villefranche sur Mer, attracted artists such as the French poet and filmmaker Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) and entertainment personalities who to this day still frequent Villefranche sur Mer as Bono of U2, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones and Elton John.
